When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

Find your Zone
Exactly which USDA hardiness zone are you in? Well, it depends. Use our zone map and article to help. |
|
|
|
Editor's note: Speaking of USDA zones... we get asked from time to time why we often don't include hardiness zones for the plants that we feature in our newsletter. For many of our plants, we do have hardiness zone information on our website (for each plant we feature you can click on the plant name to see it on the website, where you will find many more pictures and often additional information). For some plants, we simply don't yet have hardiness information for various reasons. Our database of plants has been a collaborative project for our members for the past 11 years, and is still under construction and always will be. Also, it's worth noting that hardiness zones only deal with a plant's ability to survive the winter, they don't help as much in knowing if a plant is good for your specific region.

Weed Control
The appeal of toxic herbicides is powerful when you're faced with a garden rapidly dominated by fast-growing weeds. |

The Little Bulbs
Fall is bulb planting season, and while many gardeners focus on the showy blooms of tulips and daffodils I have a personal preference for what people call the little bulbs. (Some people call them minor bulbs, but that doesn't seem fair, considering how lovely and low maintenance they are). |

The Cole Crop Family
Gardeners often group broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower and kohlrabi together as "cole crops". Cole is the German word for cabbage, hence the term "cole slaw". Cole crops are hardy and grow best in cool weather. An easy way to remember this is to think how much "cole" sounds like "cold" or "cool". |
