Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) |
Have Here & There Native |
2017: We had a lot in the pasture. It looked nice.
Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) |
Have Aspen Front Bank Native |
Native - these are all over the front bank and recently one popped up in the aspen garden. Lots of things pop up under the power lines.
Spreading dogbane (Apocynum androsaemifolium) |
Have Native |
Along the driveway by the ponds
Western Columbine (Aquilegia formosa) |
Have Front Native |
I call this one Rainy Pass because I saved it from a ditching job up there.
Showy Milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) |
Have Front Bank Here & There Native |
2017 & 2018 We have tons of this this summer and lots of butterflies as well!
Western Virgin's Bower (Clematis ligusticifolia) |
Have Here & There Native |
Native. Pops us on the bank, out by the ponds, and down in the woods.
Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea) |
Have Aspen Corner Here & There Knick Knack Native |
Native. This is turning up everywhere. Trying to get it gone from most everywhere other than the aspen garden and maybe the corner bank. The one in the KK is too big for me to dig up, so it's staying too. |
||
Glacier Lily (Erythronium grandiflorum) |
Have Front Native |
I dug this out of a ditch up on Washington Pass when I worked for the DOT. It's hanging on in the front bed, but not increasing at all. Like there's only one.
Tamarack (Larix occidentalis) |
Have In the Wild Native |
I love the tamaracks. These photos were taken up by Crawfish Lake.
Bitterroot (Lewisia columbiana) |
Have Rocks Native |
2020: Planted 2 small starts from Perennial Obsessions. They are native here, so I have high hopes. So far they're looking pretty weak.
Silky lupine (Lupinus sericeus) |
Have Corner Front Bank Native |
|||
Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium) |
Have Corner Native |
Native | ||
Starry False Solomon's Seal (Maianthemum stellatum) |
Have Catalpa Here & There Native |
|||
Lewis' Mockorange (Philadelphus lewisii) |
Have Catalpa Front Bank Native |
2021: I finally identified the unknown large shrub on the FB that I thought could have been a hydrangea that I planted years ago. It bloomed for the first time this year and it is definitely a Mock Orange. I can't remember if I planted this or if the birds did. It's native to this county.
Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) |
Have Aspen Veggie Garden Perennials Native |
Aspen: Cheryl and I went up to Elbow Coulee and dug these up, way back when I worked at Hanks. They've filled the corner nicely and I love the fall color. The nice Asplund guys keep them from getting too close to the power lines every couple years for the PUD. Vegetable: One migrated over to the north end of the vegetable garden and we just left it. It's now a mature tree, but the grapes grow all the way to the top, so it looks kind of weird and isn't as robust as the others. The birds like having grapes spread out over such a large area, but it doesn't stop them from eating the low-hanging fruit as I'd hoped. |
||
Nootka Rose (Rosa nutkana) |
Have Front Bank Here & There Native Weeds |
Enough already! There was some question as to whether this is correct. Baldhips roses are also native in the county. I'm pretty certain these are nootka - they're taller bushes, the hips aren't bald, and they're in the local native list, so are probably more common.
Blue Elderberry (Sambucus cerulea) |
Have Here & There Native |
This is the native elderberry that grows wild on the bank.
Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) |
Have Crabapple Here & There Native |
Native down by the river. I have started some from seed here and there.
Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) |
Have Aspen Corner Front Bank Here & There Native Weeds |
Native. Pretty aggressive. I'm trying to get these gone from all the flowerbeds, but it's a battle. At least they pull fairly easy. Aspen I've decided to let these be here because I'm tired of fighting with them. I would like to keep them away from the driveway a bit though. I don't mind them too much, except they just won't give it a rest and they look real ratty after they bloom unless I go deadhead them all. Also I don't like the smell of the foliage. |
||
Yellow Salsify (Tragopogon dubius) |
Have Native Weeds |
I kind of like these giant dandelions. |
