Chicagoland annual plant swap - Ellen The 1884 Purple tomato variety is similar in many ways to the very popular heirloom tomato "1884": The same huge flavor, the same size and shape, and similar plant characteristics but the fruit has a reddish-purple color with dusky shoulders. Spontaneous mutation from 1884, darker and better than the original, according to Tatiana Kouchnareva who cultivated and observed it in 2006. She named it so to highlight its purple color and its difference from the original. Fruit 200 to 600 grams, beefsteak type, round, swollen, and ribbed at the upper pole.
