antsinmypants's Plant List: *

A note from antsinmypants
Feel free to ask about anything in my list you may be interested in. I'm always looking to trade. Just because something isn't in my want list doesn't necessarily mean I don't want it & just because something I have isn't marked for trade doesn't mean it isn't available for trade. I stay busy so don't always get around to updating.

'Sosulka Chernaya' is of Ukrainian origin. It was developed from an accidental cross found by Aleksey Kulik in his tomato field in Ochtyrka, a small city in Sumy Oblast in Ukraine. The only thing, that Aleksey remembers about the original variety is that it had pink plum-shaped fruits. He selected it for black elongated fruits and shared seeds with Denis Terentiev, Aleksey's partner and friend, who helped to stabilize this variety and offered the seeds commercially in Ukraine and Russia. 'Sosulka Chernaya' was first introduced commercially in North America by 'Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds' under its translated name 'Black Icicle'.
Indeterminate, tall (1.9 meters tall and more), regular leaf plants with a prolific yield of medium-sized (3oz./90g) mahogany-brown, elongated fruits with dark green shoulders. Firm, dense texture and nicely balanced sweet tomato taste. Fruits can be stored for a few weeks after harvest and ripen very well off the vine. Excellent yield, starting from the middle of the season until the first frost. It's rather unique as it does well both – in cool and in warm weather conditions. Very good disease resistance. Midseason, about 75 days to maturity.
There are also sister lines of this variety in other colors: white, yellow, orange, red, pink, and green.

Black Icicle tomatoes are thick-walled, burgundy-brown fruits, about four ounces in size, with an oblong shape and tapered end. This paste-type tomato looks like a Roma tomato but has the taste profile of a Beefsteak tomato, with sweet, rich, and earthy flavors.

'Box Car Willie' tomato was bred by Joe Bratka's father and named probably after Lecil Travis Martin vel Boxcar Willie, an American country music singer. According to Tatiana's Tomato Base, Joe found the seeds for this tomato (among several others varieties like Red Barn, Mule Team and Great Divide) but could not get the seeds to germinate, and sent them to Carolyn Male, who succeeded in germinating the seed and shared this variety with other gardeners and SSE members in the mid-1990s. Carolyn Male of Latham, New Jersey, USA offered this variety in the Seed Savers 1994 Yearbook.
'Box Car Willie' is a great choice if you're looking for good old-fashioned flavor. This prolific heirloom is better than most of today's hybrids, and its round red fruits are 12-18 oz. The indeterminate vines produce excellent, crack-free, disease-tolerant tomatoes with a sweet, yet tart flavor. Midseason, about 75-80 days to maturity.

Consistent production of large, 10-16 ounce fruits. Produce bright red to orange tomatoes. A great canning variety for sauces, soups, and juices.

Originated in New Jersey. This reliable tomato variety was named after the famous singer Boxcar Willie of the Grand Ole Opry.

Plants Successfully Growing
2023 Chicagoland annual plant swap

The taste test winner many years in a row, Carbon is one of the most successful beefsteak-size tomatoes we've grown, uncovered, out in the field yet. We easily harvested a couple of hundred pounds of fruit from about 50-row feet of plants. Flattened 12-16 oz fruits have brownish shoulders and deep dark red flesh. The flavor is a revelation, deep, rich, complex. The best description I can give is immediate silence and then eyes, half-closed and rolling back in bliss, at a happy autumn tomato-tasting. Content nods and "yep, that one" announced a near-unanimous winner. It has a bit of heirloom tomato funk, concentric cracking, and blossom end "cat-facing" (though much better than most), but if your bottom line is flavor, this is the one.

Indeterminate.
