The Top Recommended Varieties of Turnips

Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa 'Seven Top')

I planted these as a trap crop between rows of lima beans. Worked well in keeping lice from the bean vines, also makes a good eating green, but roots are inedible.

Turnip (<i>Brassica rapa subsp. rapa</i> 'Seven Top')
Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa 'Purple Top')

The standard for turnips. Dependable producer of both roots and greens. Stronger flavor than many.

Turnip (<i>Brassica rapa subsp. rapa</i> 'Purple Top')
Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa 'Shogoin')

An excellent open pollinated white turnip. Better quality than White Egg and more dependable. Excellent greens.

Turnip (<i>Brassica rapa subsp. rapa</i> 'Shogoin')
Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa 'White Egg')

A 50 day cultivar. Several of the Mennonite seed and feed stores in this area stock it, so I tried it. It is a strap-leaf cultivar and I did not find the greens to be as tender and tasty as the Purple Top/White Globe. The turnips are very good at egg size, but they get pithy quickly as they get bigger.

Turnip (<i>Brassica rapa subsp. rapa</i> 'White Egg')
Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa 'Snowball')

A nice basic white variety of turnip.

Turnip (<i>Brassica rapa subsp. rapa</i> 'Snowball')
Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa 'Round Red')

A 55 day, tennis ball size, bright red turnip. Interior is white with rose blushing. Very pretty and easy to grow. Early maturing.

Turnip (<i>Brassica rapa subsp. rapa</i> 'Round Red')
Turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa 'Amber Globe')

An early 19th century antique that is still popular in the south. Globe shaped roots are smooth, nice size (best at 3-4 inches) with light yellow flesh. Excellent greens. Very competitive with the standard Purple Top/White Globe.

Turnip (<i>Brassica rapa subsp. rapa</i> 'Amber Globe')
