Common names are Hen and Chicks and Houseleeks
They are rosette forming hardy succulent plants, most of which will grow in USDA zone 4 and up. They are of European origin, found in mountain, subalpine and alpine belts throughout Europe. Sempervivum are a monocarpic perennial. They live for several years producing offsets before blooming. Once a rosette blooms it will die, hopefully leaving behind many offsets to replace her.
The blooms of Sempervivum can be quite beautiful, and occasionally I find one that has a slight fragrance. The flower colors range from varying shades of pink, red, white (seldom) and even a very pale yellow/green. They are star shaped with seven or more petals. Bees and butterflies are drawn to the blooms during the warm summer days.
Flowers are hermaphrodite, having first a male stage. Then the stamens curve themselves and spread away from the carpels at the center of the flower, so self pollination is difficult.

On the seedlings I use "Quick Start" every two weeks and then taper off about August so they are more ready for winter. The named varieties I usually only fertilize in the spring but last year I did push the ones received in '12 from Fernwood so they would be big clumps in '14. Big mistake!
