Phlox can be cut back to shorten the height and produce blooms at a later time.

Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata)

I bought this in 2011 before I was really into native plants. I enjoyed seeing how they just spilled over raised flower beds we would drive by. It was purchased at some general purpose nursery, so when I was becoming more aggressive with ornamentals, I mentioned to someone I was going to yank this non-native. I assumed wrongly about its native status and he corrected me.

Wild Blue Phlox (Phlox divaricata 'Blue Moon')

A gorgeous Phlox dicaricata selection, 'Blue Moon' has fragrant blue-lavender blooms that remain in peak condition for at least 4 weeks in spring. Blooms are lightly fragrant and are an excellent early nectar source for butterflies. Bees seem to ignore phlox in general. Foliage is glossy and attractive. Not drought tolerant.

Garden Phlox (Phlox paniculata 'Starfire')

Mildew resistant and growing to around 3 feet tall, 'Starfire' has deep, shocking pink flowers with almost black stems creating a beautiful color contrast. The foliage has dark markings also. Blooms in early to mid-summer but will keep flowering if spent flowers are cut off. A great cut flower, very fragrant, and butterflies love it.
