The Top Recommended Varieties of Oreganos

Oregano (Origanum vulgare 'Aureum')

I like it as a ground cover. Remarkably drought resistant. Not saying it can go without water all summer, especially in our area, but it is very forgiving.

Oregano (Origanum vulgare 'Hot & Spicy')

As the name implies, this cultivar combines strong oregano flavor with a punch of peppery heat. We love it in combination with regular greek oregano (and maybe a some "wimpy" italian oregano, just for balance) when we make marinara sauce. Hard to find for many years, this cultivar seems to be more widely available now. Like most herbs, it hates wet feet, especially in winter. Cold hardy, zone 5 according to Bonnie's Plants and "to at least 10 degrees" according to DeBaggio's. In colder zones, try planting at the edge of a patio or near a big rock (heat sink), mound up & amend the soil for good drainage, and cross your fingers.
