The Top Recommended Varieties of Crocosmias

Crocosmia 'Lucifer'

Has been doing well in my 6a gardens for 4 years now. I mulched it well the first two years, thinking it may be too tender, but I have not mulched it much for the last two years and it has done fine, both with and without mulch.

Montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'George Davison')

These have been doing well in my 6a garden for two years. Made it through one mild winter and one supposedly harsh winter, with a thin layer of straw, no problems.

Crocosmia 'Emberglow'

Emberglow puts on a great display here and the hummingbirds love it. Just as [plant]76125[/plant] is wrapping up it's bloom, Emberglow takes over. Overwintering just fine without protection since winter 2010/2011, I'd guess this is a hardier plant than advertized. When not in bloom, the stiff sword shaped leaves make a nice statement as well. Cut and dried they last quite a while. One leaf per tuber though or you risk damaging it.

Crocosmia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora 'Emily McKenzie')

It's mid-June and mine are full of bud spires that will open soon. They will bloom about a month before finishing. They are hummingbird magnets. They also make a nice cut flower that lasts a couple of days indoors.
