An over enthusiastic pruner has cut into the dead wood of my leylandia; any ideas about how to nurse it over the next couple of seasons?

Keep it well watered. Plants are pretty resilient and forgiving. My guess is it will recover on its own. I had a similar experience one spring when we hired out the annual pruning. 'El Choppo' cut everything straight across the top much like your photo. They looked silly the first year, but came back the 2nd. My new thought is to just let plants grow how they want and quit messing with them.
