| Cool summer weather calls for cool-season veggies such as cabbage, lettuce, spinach, beets and broccoli. There are a few tomato and cucumber varieties that will produce if you give them all day sunshine, but if you avoid the long, hot-summer crops (corn, peppers, eggplant), you'll avoid disappointment. Try growing Burpee's 'Early Pik' or 'Northern Exposure' tomatoes and 'Early Pride' cucumbers in your garden. Most herbs will thrive if given a warm, sunny spot, even in your cool summer weather. Grow basil, lemon balm, chives, dill and marjoram. Many annuals and perennials will grow well for you. Try Lobelia, Impatiens, Pansy, Hosta, Delphinium, Verbena, Phlox and Forget-Me-Not. The above suggestions should get you started on a healthy garden. Add favorite plants as you gain experience in your new garden. |
