St. Augustine is a warm season turfgrass and can be planted in April in your gardening region. You can incorporate some organic matter to loosen the soil and help your soil hold moisture. Spread 3-4 inches of compost or aged manure over the area and till or dig it in to a depth of 6 to 8 inches, then level the area. If you can rent a roller, fill it with water and go over the area to help compact it slightly and make it ready for the new turf. Best wishes with your new lawn.
