When putting down new pine straw is it necessary to remove the old pine straw or can I lay the new stuff right over the old? Also what are the advantages of synthetic pine straw and does home depot sell it?

You can place new pine straw over the old. It isn't necessary to remove the old mulch first. Synthetic pine straw is recycled polypropylene. It is not an organic product so it will not decompose, nor will it release nutrients into the soil. I'd vote for using organic mulch materials in the garden simply because they do break down and as they do, they release nutrients into the soil which plant roots can use. Plus, you can dig the old organic mulch material into the soil to help loosen it. Great way to recycle!
