Gardening Basics FAQ #4:

What's the difference between lime, limestone, dolomitic lime, and pelleted lime?

Answer:

The lime used by gardeners is simply powdered limestone rock. In addition to raising pH, limestone contains a lot of calcium, an important plant nutrient. Dolomitic limestone also contains magnesium, so choose this type if your soil is deficient in magnesium. Pelleted lime is manufactured into small pebble-like pellets, so it is easier and less dusty to apply.
