slowcala's blog: Seed Packets, Lollipops, Goblins

Yesterday was super busy for me. As soon as my feet hit the floor, I was doing the artwork for the seed packets for the 'You've Been Booed' bags. I did goblins, Frankenstein's, Scarecrows, Crystal Balls, Witches stirring the brew cauldron, Witches flying on a broom, cemeteries with bats flying, and Jack O' Lanterns. I made 22 packets in all, and they turned out nice and scary.

Those artwork pieces were on strips of paper that was a trifold. I had 4 colors to work with, and I cut each sheet into 3 strips and folded them. Inside the front flap I wrote out the instructions for each kind of flower seed. I made a pot of paste and glued the back of the artwork to the back of the coffee filter envelopes and let those dry. The next step was putting the seeds inside the envelopes and sealing those up and letting them dry.

Next, I assembled the lollipop ghosts. Simple as can be. Take the Tootsie Roll Pop and put a tissue over it and tie the tissue around the neck with a piece of orange embroidery floss. Make the eyes with a dot of a fine point Sharpie. They are the cutest little ghosts.

I think the next part is to glue handles onto the paper sacks so we can hang them on the doorknobs. That will be easy. The sacks will hold other treats and the printed info that they've been booed. I think it's a great idea to pass along to people, but the folks I would be giving it too are the type of people that probably wouldn't go to the trouble. I told Ray that she could have all but 5 of the bags. She provided most of the items and the Rudbeckia seeds. My Rudbeckia started out great back in the spring, but it dwindled down to 3 plants. Ray had about 30 plants in her garden. I provided the Zinnia 'California Giants' and Zinnia 'Lilliput's', and the Cosmo's seed.

We had an invite to the widow's house and boy, oh, boy was it out of this world. The smell of the pot roast was tempting me as soon as we walked in the door. More about that crockpot of heaven in a bit. We were attacked by her very lonely dogs and loved on them first and foremost. Then we washed up and she said she had made a 7 Layer Salad. Are you kidding me? I dished up the salad and it was on. Girl, that was so delicious and I had a 2nd bowl. Piggish of me, I know.

Then she told me how she had talked to her son by phone and stated that she didn't know what to serve and he told her that her pot-roast was his favorite and that is what she should make. When I looked at the crockpot, I knew it was going to be so extraordinarily delicious. It had a rich, creamy, broth sort of like mushroom gravy and when I tasted it, oh, I had to know how she did it. She uses a can of French Onion soup, and a can of Cream of Mushroom soup, potatoes, & carrots. That's it. No water. I guess the water content of the potatoes is enough to make that rich broth. Girls, you have got to try that recipe. I'm telling ya, it's the bombe diggity, do wah!

Wait, that's not all! She made a cherry topped cheesecake. Yes, from scratch! Then we went through to the living room, (as they went through on Downton Abby) and we talked about everything. I think she is ready for her upcoming knee surgery. I reminded her that we will help all we can. She is going to rehab directly after so that will help, and she has 2 friends/family ladies coming to the house to help for another week. She told us she is getting a sectional for the living room and she may be giving her end tables away to make room for that sectional. I had a brainstorm this morning. I have been needing to put a table in the guest bedroom for my Orchids to have more light so I could put those end tables together and make us a nice coffee table and I am currently using a Wicker coffee table and that can go to the guest room. Voila! I'm taking her a small white table for her front porch to put between the chairs and to put a nice Croton plant on. The plant is the one I potted up for her last week. Instant gratification! All she had to do was mention that I should keep my eyes open for a table and I remembered that we have that one on the patio and we never sit on our patio. I love it when a plan comes together.

Peace & Plenty.
