LysmachiaMoon's blog: A scary thought about search engines

Posted on Mar 31, 2015 7:28 AM

In my work as an editor, I often come across new research stuff that really is pretty neat...new ideas about cures, about solutions to problems of modern life, etc. But today I worked on an article that describes the early stages of how search engines (like google, bing, etc.) may be taught to provide what the authors call "personalized search" answers. OK, at first that seems good...If I type in the phrase "Catmint" I would like to be directed to pages about the plant, not to page about some girl band called Catmint. But then the authors went on to say how search engines could be taught to "rank" answers for people...with an eye toward directing them to the "correct answers." Now, wait a minute. Correct by whose light? If I search for instance on the term "Hinduism" is some unseen power going to direct me to all pages that disparage Hinduism because the unseen power is of another religion? Very disquieting.

Anyways. Yesterday was a doozy. I am swamped with work, I have little time for anything but pecking at this keyboard (and still I persist in writing long, rambling and disjointed journal entries), and here it is time for me to *shudder* go get my drivers license photo taken. I live in a rural area and everywhere is a pretty long drive. So, off I go, figuring 1 hour tops, if I don't have to wait in line. I get to the photo license place (out in the middle of cow country)...and it's abandoned. Closed. Derelict. Wind whistling through the uncut grass. Tumbleweeds in the parking lot (well, maybe not tumbleweeds...) Now what the ....? Fortunately, I remembered seeing another photo license place waaaay up there on Route 30, so back I go. Another half hour drive. At least there was no line and I was in and out in no time. PLUS, the place is in the shopping center with Ollie's Outlet Barn, so... thought I'd check out with they had. I got a pack of glads and a pack of iris for $4 each. But the real find was ROSES. They had a few big boxes filled with bare root/waxed roses at 3/$10. Mostly teas which I don't care for. But then I saw a yellow climber so I took that because my yellow climber was killed last winter. Then I saw a floribunda called Angel Face that looked kinda pretty so took that. Well, at that point might as well get 3. And then I saw it: the only one...Reine de Violette. I have no idea what that old timer was doing in that box, but you better believe she's mine now.

Now the question is, when do I get to plant them?? The weather is finally moderating to normal, but this work load...

OK, better get back to it....
