Viburnum (Viburnum carlesii Spice Island™) |
Want |
Faller carries. Smaller cultivar 4-5 x 4-6. Slow growing. Unlike many V carlesii, this variety blooms with its leaves fully expanded. Highly fragrant Burgundy and red fall color. Prune after flowering. Resistant to viburnum leaf beetle. Japanese beetles may feed on viburnum but from what I've read, it is minor. From Johnson's Nursery website: A Johnson's Nursery origination; J.N. Plant Selections introduction, Spice Island Koreanspice Viburnum was selected by Mike Yanny for its compact habit and late flowering. While other Viburnum carlesii will flower while their leaves are still emerging, Spice Island bears its large, tantalizingly fragrant blooms against its fully developed foliage. In fall, its dark green foliage turns a deep wine red adding interest to any garden location. |

Fragrant Abelia (Zabelia tyaihyoni) |
Want hummers |
very fragrant shrub. Prune after flowering. From a website I found: Abelia mosanensis: Korean abelia, fragrant abelia; rounded to spreading form with arching branches, fast grower; glossy, clean leaves; rose-pink to white fragrant flowers open in midspring; orange-red fall color; requires a rich loamy soil; slightly acidic to neutral pH; full sun to partial shade; Japanese beetle and deer resistant; hardy to zone 4b. another comment i found: I believe mosanensis is the only Abelia hardy into zone 5. I have a couple straight species plants up near the house (photo of flowers below). Nice fragrance and attractive to pollinators including hummingbirds. Haven't seen very good fall color on mine, could be related to the soil conditions at that spot (tends to be quite dry by late summer/fall). Haven't noticed any significant pest issues either, although I've heard that deer and/or rabbits can sometimes do some damage. "I've grown various types of Abelias for 20+ yrs, have never had Japanese Beetles on one... " Sweet Emotion is a cultivar. |
