4/5/2021 - I Don't Know Why Everything Is Trying To Or Is Blooming
Posted on Apr 5, 2021 1:52 PM

(almost) Everything is blooming or is trying to bloom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eek!

The saxifrages are in peak bloom, they look like big bushes of pink flowers. The azalea are blooming, the first tulip bloomed, the ~200 double tulips are budding (hope the pesky deer don't bite off the flowers like last year), the double daffodils are budding, my NoID alpine plants are blooming (gotta take photos for IDs later while they're blooming!), the Armeria maritima rubrifolia is sending out buds that look awfully like buttery brussel sprouts, the bugleweed chocolate chip is also blooming, oh my, too many things to keep track of.

Chores I finally did today after procrastinating some of them:
Deadheading daffodils - Max smelled them. I ended up with a big pile of damaged done daffodil flowers.
Cleaning up sedum and sempervivum - complaining about the weird weather, they are.

Things that finished their performance:
Single Daffodils

Things that are in their performance:
Saxifraga X Arendsii
White/Pink/Salmon Double Daffodils (is it just me or are the yellow doubles slower to bloom?!?)
Bloodroot
Anemone
Sempervivum

Things that are about to start their performance:
The yellow double daffodils
double tulips (They're AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Creeping phlox
Random alpine plants
Armeria maritima rubrifolia
Azalea
Hosta (one is going out of dormancy!)
Aquilegia
Annuals (zinnia, touch-me-nots, nasturtiums, morning glories, sweet peas etc.)

my my my, so many things to do and see!!!!!

Max is excited for spring!

Max was sick for a while (he has stomache problems) so we put him in his blankey:

3/24/2021 - Early Spring
Posted on Mar 24, 2021 7:35 AM

Hello!

It is spring here in Virginia, and I have started sowing (and sown) Sempervivum and annual seeds. This year I am growing zinnias (hybrids from last year), perennial and annual wildflowers, sweet peas, basil, ranunculus and beans. The sempervivum are at a reasonable size already, even though they were sown two months ago.

In the rock garden I have got some new plants. I am waiting for Home Depot to put the blooming irises that finished blooming in the discount area. Meanwhile, the ajuga choco chip is starting to bloom and recover from being chopped up from Merrifield. I have two saxifrages (both X Arendsii) blooming, one is a deep red/purple with 3 stripes on the petal, the other (Scenic red) has a white center. I found one mutant flower with 6 petals. I planted double daffodils last fall, they are taking longer to bud. The hyacinth have started to bloom. Max likes to smell them. The sempervivum are opening up, one of the green ones are producing a questionable amount of fuzz. I recently cleaned and re-set the rocks to make it look more natural. I think I made the soil drain too fast for some plants to grow, so I mainly grow sedum and sempervivum. The Angelina sedum is turning red from stress, one clump in the side-bed got cold damage, same for the Phedimus spurius. Much of the single (not double, at least) daffodils have bloomed. The double tulips that line the sidewalk near our front door are budding. I hope that deer do not massacre the flowers like last year.

I am very busy as of school so I have not taken many pictures.

I planted some of the double english daisies that were pink and white (I'll take pictures later this week, they look like fireworks!!!!) and plan to plant carnations soon. I was able to also plant two hostas (one dormant, another just waking up) in the beds. I am obsessed with the cream variegation. I also found two columbines ('Corbett') at Merrifield with no problems but on sale (probably because of being rootbound).

I have moved my indoor succulents and plants outdoors, there is a 36 degree Monday, which I am a bit scared about. I think those plants will do fine though.

I saw two hawks and one owl outside, along with around 20+ birdies eating birdseed. The patio below the deck where we hang the birdfeeder has a generous layer of seeds. At least we won't have to put mulch in those beds. Spring is finally here.

Here is a picture of one of the brown NoIDs now, it has turned red:
