From the article: "Basal Breaks- the Joy of New Growth"
"Long time, experienced rose exhibitors practice
something similar by snapping off the top of a new
basal break once it reaches a height of around 10 to
12 inches. This encourages more lateral growth and a
thicker cane. Most often, if basal breaks are left alone,
they develop a "candelabra" of blooms, low down on
the bush. This takes energy away from the developing
cane before it has reached its full potential. Snapping
any forming buds off the young canes will overcome
the apical dominance at the end of the cane and
encourage it to grow thicker."
This next article goes into more detail about "snapping" - very helpful.
