Hi there, we just divided and transplanted some of our grandfathers overgrown smooth hydrangea before they sold his property. We live in zone 4. It is extremely tall, some over 6ft tall. We planted some stems/roots about 5 ft apart and we are wondering if we can cut them right down now? We know they are typically pruned down in the fall…but we are thinking that so much stress is being put on the plant to grow the flowed and stems…not enough energy is going towards the roots? Please help!
