[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Sweet Splash Electra') | Posted on June 2, 2024 ]

An interesting note for this plant. Only the stems with color will produce blossoms. I happened to purchase a plant with more pale cream foliage than the others, not knowing this. Only one stem, with a green line down the middle (in one of the photos I uploaded), produced a truss and blossoms. Which produced one tomato for me. The paler sections quickly fried and dried in the sun. The plant did better once I moved it to part-shade. But the all-pale stems still did not fruit.

My one tomato was the size of a golf ball. The foliage and the tomato itself are stunning, absolutely gorgeous. The flavor was good, I got a Brix of 7 and the tomato was a bit higher on acid than sweet, no sour notes.

I am growing Sweet Splash Electra again this year (from seed), and so far the foliage is more balanced, and I expect more fruiting activity. Will update.

My bio has my Youtube info, where I posted a short taste test video of this tomato and more images.

[ Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata 'Musquee de Provence') | Posted on June 2, 2024 ]

This wonderful winter squash is a Cucurbita Moschata and highly resistant to the squash vine borer. Each plant gave me two 20 lb fruits. Pretty good, as I practice high intensity gardening; these plants were closely spaced. I am plagued by the SVB, even some moschata varieties have a hard time in my garden as the SVB infestation is so high. But the Musquee de Provence always comes through with no damage. The stems are quite thick. I seed them in April, transplant outside in May. They fruit in July, gain full size by early September and ripen to that gorgeous orange in late September.

Interesting note. The first year I grew it, I wasn't that impressed with the flavor. It was ok. The second year, it was one of the best tomatoes in the garden! Two different locations in my yard was the only difference, the year two plant was in highly amended, less clay soil. Weather was drought both years.

[ Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum 'Mushroom Basket') | Posted on April 28, 2024 ]

I garden in South Dakota, zone 5a. This tomato is exceptionally early in my garden, always the first large tomato. It is always the largest as well. That said, I no longer grow it as the flavor is very bland to my palate. If this tomato had flavor, it would be a must grow every year. Always got clusters of large fruit a pound or more. Very heathy plant, never gave me a moment of worry. No BER.
