Monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico each winter to spend the season in a protected location. A recent winter storm wiped out an estimated 490 million of these butterflies in areas that provide sanctuary for two-thirds of the winter Monarchs in Mexico. Butterfly gardening is one of the most popular gardening trends in the U.S., and now more than ever gardeners are an important link in the protection of these pollinators. You can help by planting blooms that provide nectar, milkweeds (Asclepias) that provide food for larvae, and eliminating pesticides from your gardens.
