For healthy and rapid growth, your plants need about an inch of water per week. With a rain gauge in your garden you can measure the amount of rainfall. You can buy a gauge in a garden supply store or from a seed and garden supply catalog, or you can make a simple one from a tin can with measurements scratched on the side.

Gauge Your Watering

Check the gauge often. If Mother Nature hasn't supplied enough water, you'll have to do the job yourself. It's easiest to let your sprinkler do the work if you have a large garden, but if your garden is small, a hose or even a watering can will do the trick as long as you make sure the plants are getting one inch of water each week.

If you use a sprinkler, place tin cans in different parts of the garden. Check the amount of water that collects in them as you sprinkle, and keep track of the amount of time it takes for the water to collect. Move the sprinkler when the amount of water in the can getting the greatest amount measures an inch. When you move the sprinkler, overlap the areas being watered. This simply means moving the sprinkler so that part of the spray falls on the edge of the area you just watered. After you've watered and measured in this way a few times, you'll have a good idea how long your sprinkler needs to run in different areas of your garden so that the entire garden gets just the right amount of H2O.

Eggplant, although it has the same need for water as peppers and okra, is a fairly drought-resistant plant.
