Gardening Articles: Care :: Pests & Problems

Noteworthy Book

by Kathy Bond Borie

Weeds: friend or foe? by Sally Roth (The Reader's Digest Association, Inc., New York, 2002; $24.95). If you allow clover to dot your lawn and welcome those wayward clumps of forget-me-nots that suddenly appear amongst your perennials, you'll appreciate the premise of this book. While you might not believe pigweed was sent by the gods, like the ancient Zuni people did, you might be interested in learning how to cook the leaves (a high source of several vitamins). Each plant is pictured and described in detail; and suggestions are given for how to use the plant (for eating, medicinal concoctions, crafts). But if you'd prefer to know the best way to rid your garden of any of these invaders, this book can help you with that, too.
