| What is the division size from a flat of Irish or Scotch moss and the recommended spacing for planting to fill in reasonably quickly. I noted recommendations on wild mosses to use yeast/water to encourage branching growth, is this recommended for these larger mosses as well? Is there any effect on ferns, hydrangea or other shade plants with the yeast mixture? |
| Both Scotch and Irish moss (Sagina) make dense, compact, mosslike masses of slender leaves on slender stems. Both are grown primarily as ground covers and they're useful for filling gaps between paving blocks. Although they look like moss, these plants won't grow well under conditions that suit true mosses. They grow in full sunshine to partial shade, need good soil, good drainage, and occasional feeding with slow-acting, non-burning fertilizer. They take some foot traffic. Cut four inch squares from flats and space them 6 inches apart for quick coverage. The yeast mixture will encourage establishment of natural mosses, but not Sagina or other plants. |
