| I purchased a Miss Oklahoma Canna and plan on keeping it indoors. Could I get some tips on how to nurture it inside? Specifically, cutting back, fertilizing, etc. Thank you! |
| Cannas have big root systems and require full sun, rich soil and lots of water when planted outdoors in order to grow and bloom well, so it may be difficult for you to grow it -- and get it to bloom -- indoors. It is not usually grown as a houseplant. If you want to experiment, set the rhizome barely covered in a larger container using a good quality potting mix. Follow a regular fertilization schedule with a water soluble fertilizer formulated for flowering plants (read and follow the directions). Keep the soil evenly moist but not sopping wet. Keep the plant in the brightest available location and at temperatures of at least 70 to 75 degrees if at all possible. It should not need cutting back, it is a narrow upright grower with flowers forming more or less at the top of the plant. You may trim off old flowers once they have faded, however.
