Bird-of-Paradise plants are impressive in flower. Unfortunately, the plants need to be five years old before they will send forth their spectacular flower stalk. They thrive in a warm, sunny location, indoors or out. An application of liquid fertilizer every 2 weeks in spring and summer and once a month in fall and winter will keep them growing well. While they are in pots smaller than 12", repot these plants every spring using a soil-based potting mixture. Once they are in 12" pots, you can justadd new soil on the top. When the leaves get dusty, they can be cleaned with a damp sponge. The Bird of Paradise plant grows to about 3' tall with a 2' spread.
