To start cannas early, you need a very bright warm location of at least 70 degrees with 75 being better. Plant the rhizomes in pots large enough to accommodate them comfortably, using a soilless mix. Water lightly until they sprout, then keep the soil evenly moist. Keep them in the brightest light possible, setting them outdoors as soon as daytime temperatures are moderate. Protect them from frost as they do not tolerate it at all. Once the danger of frost has passed and nights are reliably in the 40's, plant them in rich moist soil in a warm sunny location.
