| I really need to know everything there is to know about growing strawberries INDOORS. Since I moved I don't have a back yard any more and I wanted to experiment with strawberries this year. How can I do this? P.S. I do have a pretty roomy back porch area that gets good sunlight. |
| Unfortunately, strawberries do not lend themselves to indoor growing because they need lots of sunshine. You can experiment by growing them in a large container such as a half barrel out on the porch in as much sun as you have available, then leaving them outside for the winter. The larger container may insulate the roots enough to keep them alive all winter, especially if you porch is sheltered from the wind. Alternatively you might try the little alpine strawberries or perhaps the "Pink Panda" strawberry and grow them in smaller containers (they are quite decorative), being prepared to replace them as needed due to possible winterkill. These plants are also more shade tolerant. To really experiment, you could try bringing them indoors under lights for the winter and see if they will continue producing for you. |
