Bangor Garden Show
For a touch of spring at the end of winter, consider going "down east" to the Bangor Garden Show, March 30-31 in Bangor, Maine. Exhibits by 10 area landscapers will inspire you, while talks by gardening experts such as Roger Swain and Mrs. Greenthumbs will entertain and educate you. And of course, there'll be a huge vendor area to buy all the accessories and plants you need. For more information, call (207) 990-1201 or contact the Web site, Bangor Garden Show.

Books

The Adventurous Gardener
Even though I buy most of my seeds and plants through the mail and Web sites, there's nothing like visiting local nurseries in spring and summer to see what's growing best in your area. A new book, The Adventurous Gardener, by Ruah Donnelly (Horticulture Press, 2000; $25), highlights hundreds of small nurseries throughout New England - many that specialize in single types of plants such as daylilies or roses. The author provides a description of each nursery, along with directions and contact information. It's a good resource for finding those little "out of the way" places with special treasures.
