Old and New Lantana
Everything old is new again in plants and the new lantana selections 'Sonrise', 'Sonset', and 'Sampson' prove that adage today. Bicolored lantanas fell off the charts in favor of excellent performers such as 'New Gold' a few years ago, but they're back in style with these three tough plants.
Selected from grower's stock in Mississippi, then named and patented as the Son series, they feature bright shades of yellow, gold, rose, and carmine red. The plants stand out for color and performance during drought and cold spells.
The Gardener's Guide to Growing Maples
The Gardener's Guide to Growing Maples, by James G. S. Harris (Timber Press, 2000; $30), celebrates the trees the author grows so well. Although many general gardening books are not particularly southern friendly, this one is. Maples are popular for their form, color, and dramatically lobed and cut leaves, and James Harris sorts them all out for serious fans of the genus Acer in this thoroughly beautiful book.
