Bedside Companion
If you love flowers and don't have a wise gardening grandmother to turn to for advice, Elizabeth Lawrence is available for adoption. Lawrence's A Southern Garden, (University of North Carolina Press, $30), originally published in 1942, contains old-time wisdom for any flower grower. It's a book to keep close to your bedside and close to your heart.

Celebrations of Light
Lots of public gardens and historic homes host dazzling holiday light displays, but Arkansas has taken the idea statewide. Over 70 Arkansas towns and cities will be lit up for the holidays, forming the biggest trail of lights in the country. The best place to find details is at the state's tourism Web site, www.tourarkansas.com/lights/lights.asp.
