Clever Gardening Technique

Mingle Vegetables and Flowers
When planting vegetables, intersperse flowering plants to attract pollinators. Often, a lack of fruit set on melons, squash, and cukes is caused by a lack of bees and other pollinating insects.

Native Seeds/SEARCH
Native Seeds/SEARCH is a nonprofit organization working to strengthen food security in the Greater Southwest by conserving the region's unique crop diversity and teaching others to do the same. Preserved in their seed bank are nearly 2,000 varieties of aridlands-adapted seeds, many of them rare or endangered. They promote the use of these ancient crops and their wild relatives by distributing seeds to traditional communities and to gardeners worldwide. Currently they offer over 500 varieties from the NS/S collection (grown at their Conservation Farm in Patagonia, Arizona) through their online store, annual seedlisting, and at their retail store in central Tucson. Also find information on gardening in the desert and seed saving at their website.
