Pacific Orchid Exposition
The San Francisco Orchid Society invites everyone to paint the town with "Orchids and All that Jazz" on February 20-23, 2014. The theme of this year's event combines a symphony of orchids with the complex and classic feel traditionally associated with Jazz music. Exhibits and displays will incorporate musical creative concepts while matching music is played throughout the show. The show will be held at Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilion in San Francisco. Favorite or New Plant
Cestrum is an evergreen shrub that is native to the American tropics. The showy clusters of tubular shaped flowers are an open invitation to hummingbirds. Orange cestrum (C. aurantiacum) sports brilliant orange flowers followed by white berries, while red cestrum (C. elegans) bears purplish-red flowers followed by red berries. Cestrum is best planted in a protected area in your garden. Cestrum does best in part shade with regular watering. It needs frequent tip pruning to prevent it from becoming leggy but will recover if occasionally cut all the way to the ground.
