Favorite or New Plant

Western Hackberry
If you need a water-thrifty tree in your landscape, consider the Western Hackberry (Celtis occidentalis). Once this tree becomes established, it can survive through drought periods. Its bark is noted for the tire-tread markings, and it has good fall color with greenish-yellow foliage.

Plant in full sun in well drained soils. It should be noted that the tree will host tiny insects that cause the development of nipple galls on the leaves. This is not harmful and considered a delicacy for many bird species. Hackberry is an excellent tree for a wildlife-friendly garden.
