Favorite or New Plant

Penstemons
Penstemons have always been a favorite in my garden. They are a magnet for hummingbirds, butterflies, and sphinx moths. One of my favorites, which maintains its handsome needle-like foliage year-round, is pineleaf penstemon(Penstemon pinifolius). It has wonderful orange-red blooms in summer and makes a nice ground cover. It reseeds readily and also transplants easily. Be sure to plant in a sunny location in well-drained soil. It is a water-thrifty perennial that will do just fine during drought and water restrictions.

Clever Gardening Technique

Design Landscape with Appropriate Lawn Areas
Designing your landscape with appropriate lawn areas can help you conserve water. Many gardeners find that a properly placed patio, terrace, or deck is just what they need to give their garden visual impact. While no one would advocate a lawn or garden filled with concrete or gravel, the proper amount of vegetation balanced against man-made structures can give a garden charm and personality while reducing water consumption and saving time and money.
