Favorite or New Plant

American Ambassador Poinsett brought them home from Mexico and our country has embraced the red bracts for nearly 200 years. Give yours a tabletop spot indoors near a bright window and take it out of the wrapping once a week to water the pot thoroughly. Fertilize lightly to keep the colors bold all season.

Clever Gardening Technique

Root Canes in Water
Angel trumpet and Confederate rose are big perennials with thick, fibrous canes. Recycle an old plastic pitcher and take tip cuttings about 2 feet long to root. Put in 6 inches of water with liquid rooting hormone or a little fertilizer added, slip in the cuttings, and add water as needed until roots are 3 inches long.
