Northern California Coastal & Inland Valleys
The Complete Gardener's Guide to Herbs by Patrick Lima (Firefly Publishing, 2001,$24.95) is a magnificent encyclopedia of garden herbs that includes full color photos, growing and planting tips, harvesting and preservation and seasonal planting guides. The section on perennial herbs contains tips for year round care, including how to know when it's time to put them to bed for the winter. There are recipes which include marinades and rubs and even a section on propagation. If insect pests invade your herb garden, no problem! The book addresses how to eliminate pests safely without harmful pesticides. Overall this is the most comprehensive book on herbs that I have seen in a very long time.

Cleaning Muddy Gloves
Cleaning muddy or dirty garden gloves is easy! Simply leave them on your hands and, using soap and water, wash your hands under an outdoor faucet. Be sure to scrub the fingertips especially well. Once the gloves are clean, remove them from your hands and lay them in a warm, dry location such as on top of the water heater. They will be stiff the next time you put them on, but will soften up quickly.
