Gardener's Guide to Tropcial Plants
I've always been a bit overwhelmed and confused by tropical plants, but the Gardener's Guide to Tropical Plants (Cool Springs Press, 2012), by Nellie Neal (NGA's Coastal and Tropical South Regional Reporter), provides everything I need to know. Detailed information on 130 tropicals will help me select the best species for my shady garden, while advice on overwintering will save me oodles of time and money. The easy-to-use guide also provides info on pests and diseases, propagation, container gardening, and design, and it offers plant lists for both specific sites and plant features (such as fragrant flowers or painted leaves). In short, with Nellie's book at my fingertips, I'm sure I'll be able to expand my horticultural horizons beyond the colorful croton that graces my pumpkin display each fall.
