White Butterfly Ginger
Few plants can perfume the air like white butterfly ginger (Hedychium coronarium). This tender perennial will survive the winter in much of the Lower South if provided a deep protective mulch cover. In late summer to fall the plant's 4 to 5 foot tall, upright stalks each bear a bloom head of large white flowers that fill the air with a wonderful gardenia-like fragrance. Butterfly ginger is thrives in moist soil amended with compost and prefers a very bright shade to dappled sun location. It is more tolerant of some direct sun than most other types of ginger.
