Mindful Gardening
Entering the garden
I see my true nature.
In its reflection
my heart is at peace.

Mindfulness in the Garden: Zen Tools for Digging in the Dirt by Zachiah Murray (Parallax Press) is a beautiful collection of thoughts and practices to connect the mind and body to full awareness as you work in the garden. Enhanced throughout with graceful black and white wood block prints, this book is the ideal gift for every gardener who feels that plants are living things and there is a connection between the natural and the spirit world. It explores such things as the beauty of the impermanence of a flower and the wisdom of water. Mindful Gardening is a small book that is well designed as a piece of useful art.

Clever Gardening Technique

Build a Toad Abode
A toad will spend many happy years in your garden if he finds a comfortable spot. Toads are voracious consumers of pests such as cutworms and grubs, and unlike birds, don't nibble on plants. Toads are nocturnal creatures and drink through their skin. To encourage Mr. Toad to live in your yard, find a damp, shady area and partially bury an 8 to 12 inch clay pot so that there is an opening large enough for a toad to enter but too small for a curious cat or bird. The pot should be watered by the irrigation system to keep it moist at all times.
