Monet's Garden Exhibit
My next garden trip will be a visit to the New York Botanic Garden in early October to see Monet's Garden, a tribute to the great French Impressionist Claude Monet. This special exhibition features a seasonally changing interpretation of the gardens that inspired his art. Two original paintings by the artist will be on show, as will photographs of Monet's iconic garden, Giverny. Concerts, poetry readings, and other events are scheduled. The exhibit, currently open, continues through October 21. For more information, visit the NYBG website at www.nybg.org.
If there's a trip in your future and you want to include a garden or two, 1001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die, edited by Rae Spencer-Jones (Barron's, 2007), is a good place to start. Organized geographically, beginning in North America and moving east, the book provides a brief overview of the most well-known gardens in many countries, but not all. The list is heavy on gardens in Europe (618 of the book's 960 pages), making it an especially good resource for this part of the world.
