Vacation Care for Indoor Plants
If you are headed off for summer vacation, keep your indoor plants alive for up to one month by setting them in the bathtub on top of a moist towel. Water the plants well before you set them in the tub. The plants will create humidity for each other and the towel will help prevent the pots from drying out before your return. Keep the light level dim and do not fertilize prior to leaving on your trip. Actively growing plants require more water.
Favorite or New Plant
Mexican sage (Salvia leucantha) is a vigorous plant that hummingbirds adore! It has abundant velvety purple flowers which begin blooming in spring and last through the fall. The flowers last well in flower arrangements. Mexican sage sends out basal shoots and may become invasive, but when a guest is so beautiful it's difficult to ask them to leave. To prevent sage from spreading rampantly, cut to the ground before the spring growing season begins.
