Tomato Tasting & Sizzlin' Summer Salsa Contest
August 4th, 2012, 10am-2pm. Every year, The Fullerton Arboretum dares home gardeners to bring their tastiest tomatoes and salsa to compare with everyone else's. For the tomato tasting, bring whole, labeled tomatoes to be sliced and served by volunteers. For the salsa contest, bring samples in three 2-ounce containers with lids for the judges and 4 quarts for guests to taste and identify which category you're submitting: Wimpy or Mild & Mannerly (very mild), Now You're Talkin'! (medium), Hot Cha Cha!!! (get the fire extinguisher). The only stipulation is that all tomatoes and peppers MUST be homegrown. 1900 Associated Rd., Fullerton 92831. For more information, go to www.fullertonarboretum.org or call 657-278-3407.

Clever Gardening Technique

Pantyhose on Grape Clusters
Slip eight-inch sections of old pantyhose over grape clusters, tying the top and bottom with twist-ties or string in a bow. They keep out assorted insects and birds but are easy to remove for harvesting and can be reused each year.
