Insect Festival
Thousands of fascinating creepy-crawlies including live insects, lizards, snakes, and the famous "Madagascar hissing cockroaches" will be on display at the Insect Festival at the San Diego Botanic Garden on July 14-15 from 9 am to 5 pm. Children can practice bug collecting, hands-on insect arts and crafts, and even taste cooked mealworm larva (in various flavors such as mesquite, teriyaki, and barbeque!). Entomologists and other bug experts will be available for questions, and more than 20 informational booths will teach and entertain children and adults alike. Free for members and children 12 and under; non-members free with admission. San Diego Botanic Garden, 230 Quail Gardens Drive, Encinitas 92024. For more information, go to www.sdbgarden.org, call 760-436-3036, or email info@SDBGarden.org.

Clever Gardening Technique

Water First, Then Mulch
Keep adding to mulches throughout the summer to conserve water, keep roots cool, and foil weeds. Remember to water well before applying the mulch, or you'll insulate dry soil rather than moist soil. Pile mulch two to six inches deep under shrubs, trees, vines, flower and vegetable beds. Let grass clippings dry out a bit before piling them (or just spread them thinly), or they'll clump into a mat that's impervious to later watering.
