Small Space Gardening
So many people live in apartments, condominiums, or small city spaces and feel left out when it comes to gardening. The City Gardeners Handbook: The Definitive Guide to Small Space Gardening by Linda Yang (Storey Publishing, 2002, $19.95) gives extremely practical advice on exactly what to plant and how to grow a beautiful landscape, even if only in containers. Yang provides plenty of information about what will grow in the city, and includes tips on selecting wind, heat and drought-tolerant plants. She gives advice on coping with pollutants, city pests, and the challenges of gardening in a small, sometimes cramped space.

The unusually named Altaiskaya melon is an heirloom cantaloupe that originated in Siberia. It's perfect for our short Midwestern growing season, needing only 75 days to ripen. The melons have yellow-orange flesh that is fragrant and sweet. The vines grow only 4-5 feet long, making this a good candidate for patio gardening in a container.
