Vinca 'Jams 'N Jellies Blackberry'
Even the name will make you drool. I've never been a great fan of annual periwinkle, mostly because the flower colors left me cold. But the 2012 All America Selection (AAS) Flower Award winner, Vinca 'Jams 'N Jellies Blackberry' (Catharanthus roseus) is one I have to try. The blossoms are dark velvety purple that look almost black, with tiny white eyes which give a lovely contrast. And, most appealing, these plants are drought tolerant and heat tolerant. They take over after the violas and pansies give out and thrive through the dog days of August. The plants grow on only about a foot tall and are perfect for that hot, sunny bed.
