I received an unusual book in the mail last week. The book Birds, by Arin Murphy-Hiscock (Adams Media, 2012) is a spiritual field guide that includes magnificent color plates of common birds such as the egret and the sparrow. What makes this particular book unusual is that it includes omens and divinatory meanings associated with each bird. For example, the robin is associated with storms and Thor, the Norse god of thunder. In addition, a robin was supposedly present at the crucifixion of Christ; a drop of His blood stained the robin's breast for ever after. In another example the quail is associated with fecundity and fertility because of it's large clutches of eggs. Birds: A Spiritual Field Guide is an interesting read and contains meditation guides, habitat and environmental information, and interesting facts on each bird listed. Illustrated, 225 pages including index.
