Books

Beautiful at All Seasons
The allure of favorite garden writers is strong in winter, and though there are plenty of new books waiting on my bedside table, I've turned again to Elizabeth Lawrence. This time I'm revisiting Beautiful at All Seasons (Duke University Press, 2007), a collection of 132 columns written by Lawrence for the Charlotte Observer between 1957 and 1971 and edited by Ann L. Armstrong and Lindie Wilson. As relevant today as they were 40 years ago, these snippets of knowledge are filled with quotations from poetry, bits of correspondence, engaging tales of friends and neighbors, and a conversational style that keeps pages turning.
