43rd Annual Sheffield Garden Walk
The "Summer's Best Festival" provides a magnificent weekend of self-guided tours of more than 90 gardens, guided architectural tours, live entertainment by some of Chicago's and North America's finest bands, food and drink, and activities for children at the Kids Corner. The gardens are located within the boundaries of the Sheffield neighborhood, which extends from Halsted west to the Chicago River, and from Armitage north to Fullerton. The festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday, July 23-24, 2011 from noon to 5:30 pm. For more information, visit http://sheffieldfestivals.org/index.html.
Clever Gardening Technique
Put Those One-liter Soda Bottles to Good Use
Keep the caps and screw them on tightly. Punch holes in the bottom half of the bottle with an awl. Bury the bottom half of the bottle next to a tomato plant when you plant it, angling it toward the root ball. Simply unscrew the cap and fill with water. The water will slowly leak out through the holes, watering the plant. Be sure to replace the cap to avoid anything climbing or falling into the bottle. These bottles will last two or three years if removed and stored over winter. Use smaller soda bottles for eggplants and peppers.
